Another option to bypass the assets pipeline and compiling would be to mount the internal assets directly to the Rails application. That way we don't have to copy the assets runtime and we can leave the default configuration as it is.
The downside is that you can't serve the assets through an external server, but I think the main idea with these workarounds is that you can easily set it up and move to a more heavy weight solutions when needed.
