Thermostat Wiring Guide for Homeowners

Important Notes About Wire Colors

Wire colors are conventions, not standards. A previous installer may have used non-standard colors. Always verify with a multimeter before making assumptions. In South Florida, where heat pump systems are common, you'll often see the O/B orange wire for the reversing valve.


Common Wiring Configurations

Standard Central AC (Most Common in South Florida)

This is the most typical setup for a single-stage cooling system with gas or electric backup heat:

R  → Red (24V power)
Y  → Yellow (compressor)
G  → Green (fan)
W  → White (heat — often emergency/aux in FL)
C  → Blue (common — if available)

Wire count: 4-wire (R, Y, G, W) without C-wire, 5-wire with C-wire.

Heat Pump System

Heat pumps are increasingly popular in South Florida for their efficiency. They require a reversing valve wire:

R  → Red (24V power)
Y  → Yellow (compressor)
G  → Green (fan)
O  → Orange (reversing valve — cooling mode)
W2 → White (auxiliary heat strips)
C  → Blue (common)

Wire count: Typically 6-8 wires. The O/B terminal controls whether the reversing valve is energized in cooling or heating mode.

Two-Stage Cooling System

The C-Wire Problem

The C-wire (common wire) has become the most discussed wire in home HVAC because smart thermostats need continuous 24V power. Older homes in South Florida — built before the smart thermostat era — often have only 4 wires run to the thermostat (R, Y, G, W), with no C-wire.

Do You Have a C-Wire?

  1. Remove your thermostat faceplate from the wall
  2. Look for a blue wire connected to the "C" terminal
  3. If you see a blue wire tucked behind the wall plate but not connected, you may be in luck — just connect it
  4. Check your air handler: there may be extra wires at both ends that were never terminated

Why Stealing Power Doesn't Work Long-Term

Some guides suggest "stealing" power from other wires (like the fan wire G) using the thermostat's built-in power sharing. While this can work temporarily, it often causes:

  • Fan relay chattering
  • Short cycling
  • Blown fuses on the air handler control board
  • Intermittent thermostat reboots

  5. Never let bare wires touch — this can blow the 3-5 amp fuse on your control board

Voltage Warning

Thermostat wiring is low-voltage (24V AC), which is generally safe. However, the transformer can still deliver enough current to cause a painful shock or damage the control board. The 24V transformer in your air handler has a small fuse (typically 3A or 5A) that protects it — if you short the wires, this fuse will blow and your entire system will stop working until it's replaced.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Thermostat Has No Display

  1. Check the breaker — is power on at both the air handler and outdoor unit?
  2. Check the 3A or 5A fuse on the air handler control board
  3. Verify R wire is securely connected at both the thermostat and air handler
  4. If you have a C-wire, verify it's connected at both ends
  5. Test voltage between R and C at the thermostat — should read ~24-28V AC

AC Runs But Doesn't Cool

This is usually not a wiring issue, but check:

  • Y wire connection at the thermostat and air handler
  • Outdoor unit contactor — is it clicking on when Y is energized?
  • Refer to refrigerant and compressor diagnostics for non-wiring causes

Fan Runs Continuously

  1. Check if the fan switch on the thermostat is set to "ON" vs "AUTO"
  2. If set to AUTO and fan still runs, the G wire may be shorted to R
  3. Check for pinched or damaged wire in the wall

Short Cycling (System Turns On and Off Rapidly)

Wiring-related short cycling causes:

  • Loose wire connection causing intermittent contact
  • C-wire power stealing causing thermostat resets
  • Y wire partially connected, causing contactor chatter

New Thermostat Won't Connect to WiFi

This is almost always a C-wire power issue. Smart thermostats need consistent 24V power to maintain WiFi. If the thermostat keeps rebooting or losing WiFi:

  • Verify C-wire is connected and carrying voltage
  • Check that the add-a-wire adapter (if used) is properly installed
  • Test voltage between R and C at the thermostat
