currently findDiscourseNode exists if we don't pass the uid which is wrong because both uid and title are optional

@sid597: I'll conduct a full review of this PR. I can see this addresses a bug in findDiscourseNode where the function incorrectly exits when uid is not passed, even though both uid and title are optional parameters. I'll review all the changes to ensure the fix properly handles the optional parameters.

Learning: In apps/roam/src/utils/findDiscourseNode.ts, the function findDiscourseNodeByTitleAndUid accepts both uid and title parameters where uid is primarily used for cache access (as the cache key) while title is used for the actual matching via matchDiscourseNode. This design reflects the pattern where downstream, the uid is mostly used to fetch the title, so the function caches by uid but matches by title.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The findDiscourseNode utility function was modified to add early-return guards when both uid and title are undefined, implement conditional cache lookups and storage based on uid truthiness, and apply non-null assertions for uid in specific branches. The function signature remains unchanged.

Changes

Cohort / File(s) Summary
Discourse Node Cache Logic
apps/roam/src/utils/findDiscourseNode.ts
Added guard clause for undefined uid/title pair; refactored cache lookup to only use uid when truthy; adjusted caching to store only when uid is truthy; applied non-null assertion for uid in spread operations when title is undefined

Title check ❓ Inconclusive The title references a specific bug fix (ENG-1266) but is too vague ('Component not loading on any page'). The actual change is specifically about fixing findDiscourseNode's handling of optional uid/title parameters, which is much more concrete than the generic 'component not loading' description. Consider a more specific title that describes the actual bug fix, such as 'Fix findDiscourseNode to properly handle cases when uid is omitted' or similar, which better reflects the technical change being made.

Learning: In apps/roam/src/components/DiscourseNodeMenu.tsx, when handling tag insertion, multiple leading hashtags (like ##foo) should be preserved as they represent user intent, not normalized to a single hashtag. The current regex /^#/ is correct as it only removes one leading # before adding one back, maintaining any additional hashtags the user intended.

15-18: LGTM! Guard and cache lookup correctly fix the bug.

The changes correctly address the core issue:

  • Line 15 ensures at least one parameter is provided before proceeding
  • Line 16 prevents cache lookup when uid is absent, fixing the bug where discourseNodeTypeCache[undefined] would create a string key "undefined"

This aligns with the design pattern where uid serves as the cache key. Based on learnings, uid is primarily used for cache access.

20-25: LGTM! Non-null assertion is safe.

The uid! assertion on line 23 is type-safe because of the guard on line 15. When title === undefined, the only way to pass the guard is if uid !== undefined. TypeScript's control flow analysis can't infer this, making the assertion necessary.

The logic correctly routes to uid-based matching when title is absent and title-based matching otherwise.

26-26: LGTM! Conditional caching prevents the undefined key bug.

Only caching when uid is truthy prevents discourseNodeTypeCache[undefined] from creating an "undefined" string key. This is correct design since the cache is uid-keyed. Title-only lookups at initializeObserversAndListeners.ts:99 will skip caching (intentional and acceptable), and empty string uids are treated as falsy, also bypassing the cache—all call sites handle this correctly.
