Petshop How‐To
The Animal Trainer works at the pet shop, and can raise and train animals to perform a few basic tasks.
The pet shop can support up to two pets per level. The animal trainer will acquire and raise these pets when provided with the right items - and a small fee. Use the Training Items tab to see what items (and fee) is required. The fee will be deducted from the marketplace balance.
Once you have acquired a pet, you can assign them to their work location. Work locations are designated by special Pet Working Blocks. There are four types:
- Trough: This pet working block supports the "herding" job. When placed in a husbandry building a pet assigned to this job will find loose animals of the type supported by the husbandry building and herd them back into their building. They will not "create" these sorts of animals in the world - they have to be around to be found and escorted back to the target trough. The player may need to help them get back inside the fence, if they've escaped a fenced area. While the pets are smart enough to operate fences, they can't shepherd through a closed fence.
- Mushroom Scavenging Base: This pet working block should be placed in a low-light area. Pets assigned to this location will forage for mushrooms in and around this area.
- Dredger: This pet working block should be placed in shallow water (1 or 2 blocks deep). Pets assigned to this location will forage the shallow water within 8 blocks for useful items. Eligible forage targets are clay, sand, grave, kelp, prismarine, dark prismarine, ice, packed ice and blue ice.
- Feeder: This pet working block should be hung in a tree canopy or placed amidst ground covering foliage. Pets assigned to this location will search the vegetation for useful items. When hung, the search area is up to 10 blocks above and 2 blocks below in a 12 block radius. When on the ground the search area is up to 2 blocks above or below in a 12 block radius. Eligible forage targets are tree leaves, sweetberry bushes, cocoa, vines, pumpkins, melons, grass, sugar can, ferns, bamboo, and cactus.
The Dredger and Feeder support specifying a targeted foraging item (unlocked with research) that gives your pets a higher chance of finding the specific thing you want them to focus on.
Shortly after placing a pet working block (it can take a minute or two), they will show up in the Pet Assignment tab, where you can assign pets to work at that location. Multiple pets can work at the same location.
This tab also allows you to recall the pet to the animal trainer, or to have them retire so that you can clear up room for a different type of pet.
The Animal Trainer can (after unlocked with research) also procure livestock for you to populate your farms with. The process is similar to that for acquiring pets, in that you provide the right type of material, and must have an economic balance sufficient to support the acquisition.
Pet Shops do not have any special tagging locations, but do require a bit of clear space around the hut block into which the new pets can be raised.
The mctradepost:amphibious_scavenge tag indicates what blocks are valid dredger forage targets. Any block with this tag needs a corresponding loot table at mctradepost:pet/amphibious_scavenge/blockname.json which controls what might be found.
- The mctradepost:scavenge_fruit tag indicates what "fruit-like" blocks are valid feeder forage targets. Any block with this tag needs a corresponding loot table at mctradepost:pet/vegetation_scavenge/fruit/blockname.json which controls what might be found.
- The mctradepost:scavenge_leaves tag indicates what "leaf-like" blocks are valid feeder forage targets. Any block with this tag needs a corresponding loot table at mctradepost:pet/vegetation_scavenge/leaves/blockname.json which controls what might be found.
- The mctradepost:scavenge_groundcover tag indicates what "groundcover-like" blocks are valid feeder forage targets. Any block with this tag needs a corresponding loot table at mctradepost:pet/vegetation_scavenge/groundcover/blockname.json which controls what might be found.
