Although `version_defaults` is deeply frozen, it used `attr_accessor`!

Although
version_defaultsis deeply frozen, it usedattr_accessor!Note: this needs to be backported to v0.5-stable, which also got the bug via #584. If #544 is backported to v0.4-stable, it will need this patch, too.
